Can I use this course for my DofE Award?

Our online course is ideal for those who are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Our course can be used for your 3 month skill section and we are able to write a report based on your achievement and submit it directly to the DofE portal.

Do you offer BSL Level 1 or BSL Level 2 qualifications?

The course that we provide is an introductory online course. Our course covers some similar content to that of BSL Level 1 but this is not the same qualification.

What format is the course in?  What does the layout look like, how is it presented, and what topics are covered?

Our online course "Introducing British Sign Language" is a self-study course that is set out into 10 sections. Each section is made up of webpages of information and short video clips demonstrating the signs that you are learning.

Assessments

Each section ends with an assessment that involves watching short video clips and answer questions based on what you have seen. To pass the course you will need to achieve at least 85% on each of the assessments on the course. Assessments can be retaken as often as you like. The course does not contain audio.

Certificate

On completion of the course you will have access to your certificate which shows that you have completed the course. This certificate contains a verification code which can be used by people such as employers to verify that your certificate is authentic.

Our online course "Introducing British Sign Language" is a comprehensive introduction to BSL and is a really great place to get to grips with beginning to learn BSL. Our online course will give you the skills to understand, sign, and hold conversations in a range of topics as well as understand a bit about BSL grammar and syntax.

Once you have completed this course, and if you wish to continue learning BSL, it would be a good idea to attend Signature's BSL Level 1 evening classes or other face-to-face course so that you can gain the benefit of interacting with other BSL users. PAY WHAT YOU CAN

During this difficult time, as many of us are spending long periods at home, we would like to provide the opportunity for you to use this time to learn British Sign Language. Our 20hr CPD certified course can be studied at your own pace and is a comprehensive introduction to BSL.

Because of this we are now asking those who wish to sign up to the course to pay what they feel they are able (from £3 per person). Maybe things are particularly tight for you at the moment and you can’t afford to pay the full fee, or maybe you wish to pay extra to contribute towards a place for someone else.

Please note that we are a commercial organisation and we receive no external grants or funding.

Guide Price (only for guidance, you can decide what you wish to pay)

£3 – if you are a full-time student or finding things tight right now.
£10 – If you are a Key Worker or playing an important role during the current crisis.
£25 – this is the normal cost of enrollment and enables us to continue developing resources.

Is this course suitable for children? Are there any age restrictions?

Accepted Answer

There are no age restrictions for taking our course.

The course does involve a bit of reading and therefore our recommendation is that it wouldn't be suitable for anyone under the age of 12 or 13 years old. The course would not be suitable for children under this age but it is great if someone that young is showing an interest in BSL. We would suggest that if they wish to take the course that they do so with the support of an adult or older friend.
