Pay What You Can

We aim to make BSL learning accessible for as many people as possible. The course used to be £25, but we understand that cost can be a barrier for some learners. That’s why we’re now offering a "Pay What You Can" model.

With this model, you can enrol for as little as £3 – with the option to pay more if you feel able. Paying more than the minimum helps sustain the course and supports others in learning BSL. Thank you for helping us spread BSL knowledge.

Note: We’re a commercial organisation with no external funding or grants. Your support keeps this course available.

Suggested Contributions (choose what feels right for you)

£3 (£2.50 + VAT) – Ideal if you’re a student or on a tight budget.
£15 (£12.50 + VAT) – Covers the cost of delivering the course to you.
£25+ (£20.83 + VAT) – Our regular price, which helps support future resources and other learners.

These are only suggestions, and there are no set rules. We simply ask for a minimum contribution of £3.

Access and Fees

The fee you pay is a one-off charge, giving you two years of access to the complete course.

Where can I learn BSL in a town near me?  Evening classes & other courses.

Can I use this course for my DofE Award?

Our online course is ideal for those who are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Our course can be used for your 3 month skill section and we are able to write a report based on your achievement and submit it directly to the DofE portal.

STUDYING THE COURSE

To get started please visit this page and enrol on the course: http://www.british-sign.co.uk/learn-online-british-sign-language-course/ - Please note that after paying for your enrolment you must ensure that on the enrolment dashboard page you enter the name of the person taking the course, not the person who made the booking - this is the name that your assessor report will be written for and must be correct before you begin the course.
Please ensure that you study the course for around 1hr each week for a 3 month period. When we write your assessor report we include your access logs - please ensure you fulfil the requirements otherwise your report might not be approved by your DofE coordinator/leader. Please resist the temptation to complete the entire course in a few sessions.

Do you offer BSL Level 1 or BSL Level 2 qualifications?

The course that we provide is an introductory online course. Our course covers some similar content to that of BSL Level 1 but this is not the same qualification.

Once I have completed the online course what is next?  Do you offer any higher level courses?

Our online course "Introducing British Sign Language" is an introduction to BSL and is a really great place to get to grips with beginning to learn BSL. Our online course will give you the skills to understand, sign, and hold conversations in a range of basic topics as well as understand a bit about BSL grammar and syntax.

Once you have completed this course, and if you wish to continue learning BSL, we recommend that you attend Signature's BSL Level 1 evening classes or other face-to-face course so that you can gain the benefit of interacting with other BSL users. We don't keep a database of courses from other providers but an internet search should help you find something suitable.

Question 6

How is the course delivered? What format is the course in?

Our online course "Introducing British Sign Language" is a self-study course that is set out into 10 sections. Each section is made up of webpages of information and short video clips demonstrating the signs that you are learning.

Assessments

Each section ends with an assessment that involves watching short video clips and answering questions based on what you have seen. To pass the course you will need to achieve at least 85% on each of the assessments on the course. Assessments can be retaken as often as you like. The course does not contain audio.

Certificate

On completion of the course you will have access to your certificate which shows that you have completed the course. This certificate contains a verification code which can be used by people such as employers to verify that your certificate is authentic.
