Is the course suitable for children? Are there any age restrictions?

There is no minimum age for taking Introducing British Sign Language.

The course is primarily designed for teenagers and adults. It involves a fair amount of reading, independent study and online assessments, so we generally recommend it for learners aged around 14 or over.

Learners under 14

Younger learners are welcome to take the course, but they may need support from a parent, carer, teacher or older family member.
An adult may need to help them:

• read and understand some of the course material
• work through the sections at a suitable pace
• practise the signs and activities
• complete the online assessments

Whether the course is suitable will depend on the individual child’s reading ability, concentration and interest in learning BSL.

Learning together

A younger child may get more from the course by studying alongside an adult. This also gives them someone to practise with between lessons.

Each learner who needs their own course progress record and certificate must have a separate enrolment.

Schools and organised groups

The course can also be used by schools, youth groups and other organisations. An adult can purchase and manage several learner enrolments through the enrolment dashboard.

The course is self-paced, so learners can take breaks and return to earlier material whenever they need to.
